Comparative Visual Analysis of Observable Stellar Characteristics and Their Relation to Stellar Evolutionary Stage

Stellar evolution influences a star's observable properties, including its color, luminosity, temperature, and radius. This study investigated whether visual observations obtained with amateur astronomical equipment, when interpreted alongside established stellar catalog data, can provide meaningful insight into stellar evolutionary stages. Seven nights of observations were conducted on Vega and Antares, representing distinct stages of stellar evolution. Qualitative observations of apparent color, brightness, and scintillation were compared with published stellar parameters and interpreted using the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram. In addition, this study introduces a preliminary Visual Evolutionary Indicator (VEI), an exploratory heuristic that combines stellar luminosity, radius, and temperature to facilitate comparative analysis of evolutionary characteristics. To assess its consistency, the VEI was applied to a broader selection of stars spanning multiple evolutionary stages using published catalog data. The results demonstrate that both the observational findings and the VEI are generally consistent with established stellar properties and evolutionary trends while also highlighting the influence of atmospheric conditions and light pollution on visual observations. Although the VEI shows promise as an educational and comparative framework, it remains a preliminary heuristic and requires further validation using larger and more diverse stellar datasets before broader scientific application. These findings demonstrate that amateur observations, when combined with established astrophysical data, can provide meaningful educational insight into stellar evolution while illustrating the potential and limitations of visually based observational studies.
