Attention, Memory, and Classroom Design: A Review of Environment-Based Learning Strategies

The integration of cognitive psychology into pedagogical practice represents a critical frontier for improving student outcomes. This review investigates the complex relationship between the cognitive processes of attention and memory, exploring how their biological interplay influences the mechanisms of learning. Through a synthesis of neurobiological evidence and applications of environmental psychology, this paper identifies specific variables that modulate attentional filtering and mnemonic encoding. Key variables analyzed include correlated color temperature (CCT), spatial variability, and tactile engagement. Drawing upon primary research, this review demonstrates how specific design principles, such as lighting and classroom layouts, act as biological interventions that facilitate selective attention and mitigate cognitive load. The findings suggest that when classroom design aligns with the dynamic nature of these neurological processes, student engagement and retention significantly improve. This review proposes a framework for flexible learning spaces, providing evidence-based strategies for educators and policymakers to restructure the physical classroom to improve cognitive performance and long-term retention. Ultimately, the paper concludes that the educational environment is a critical component of the cognitive processes of learning and argues for systemic integration of neurobiological principles to improve student success.
