How Human Technology Shapes the Fate of Biodiversity: Case of Javan Rhino

This paper explores how the evolution of human technology, from Paleolithic tools to modern digital systems, has shaped human development and led to environmental consequences. Early technologies, including composite tools and the controlled use of fire, display patterns of innovation centered on survival, efficiency, and adaptation. Over time, these technological systems became increasingly complex, culminating in the large-scale technologies commonly used in the modern era. While these technologies have significantly increased the quality of life for humans, they have also coincided with the loss of biodiversity. Using Javan rhinos as an example, this paper examines how modern technological systems, global incentives, and global demand have impacted poaching and habitat destruction. The paper argues that while technology was not originally designed to cause harm, its impact depends on how responsibly humans use it, and that future progress must prioritize ethical environmental stewardship.
