Financial innovation has transformed payment systems by improving efficiency, accessibility and financial inclusion through digital technologies. Amongst these innovations, India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has emerged as one of the world’s most influential real-time payment systems, fundamentally reshaping the country’s digital payment landscape. Drawing on theories of financial innovation, digital payment systems, and innovation adoption, the paper first establishes the conceptual foundations of financial innovation and then examines UPI as a case study. As part of this, the paper evaluates UPI’s contribution to financial inclusion, the informal economy and consumer payment behavior, while critically assessing challenges, including the digital divide, uneven digital literacy and cybersecurity concerns. The paper argues that UPI is a highly successful financial innovation, characterized primarily by process innovation and supported by institutional innovation, that has substantially transformed India's payment ecosystem and expanded participation in the formal financial system. That said, its wider social and economic impact remains uneven due to persistent structural and institutional constraints. The finding suggests that technological innovation alone cannot achieve inclusive socio-economic transformation without complementary investments in digital infrastructure, financial literacy and supportive public policy.
